 The Selawik River freezes every year. It is highly recommended that you visit with locals about river conditions and when it is safe to use the rivers as a form of transportation. Selawik, Alaska pictured from the top of Rainbow Bridge. Snow machines are used for transportation during the winter.

Crossing the Selawik River in the spring. It is not open water that the snow machine is crossing. It is puddles of water that are about a foot deep. When crossing the puddles the snow machine will not sink if you are going fast enough. They call this water skipping.
