The Chrysler Building built in 1930 with William Van Alen as architect. For a few months, this Art Deco skyscraper was the tallest structure in the world. It was also one of the first buildings composed of stainless steel over a large exposed surface. Alen drew inspiration from machine technology for the ornamental details on the Chrysler Building: There are eagle hood ornaments, hubcaps and abstract images of cars.
John D. Rockefeller originally envisioned this midtown space as a colossal arts hub with the Metropolitan Opera at its center. Then the Depression intervened, so it went on to become the world's first mixed-use business/retail development instead. Its first component was the archetypal Art Deco GE Building (erected in 1934), with its adjoining sunken skating rink, encircled by the flags of all nations and overseen by Paul Manship's golden statue Prometheus. The 14 buildings that complete this sprawling landmark all share the same design vocabulary—limestone cladding, sparing Deco flourishes, and a liberal sprinkling of art works to relieve the otherwise sober effect. Beyond its architectural merits, the center is also a major transit center, a thriving public square, and one of midtown's most concentrated shopping districts. Stores, mainly of the mall-chain variety, can be found at street-level as well on the concourse below. Other tenants include the famed auction house Christie's, the premiere concert venue Radio City Music Hall, and the NBC studios for The Today Show, Saturday Night Live and Dateline. An artist sketches one of the many sculptures at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The Metropolitan Museum of Art is one of the preeminent cultural institutions in the world. In formation since 1870, the Metropolitan Museum's collection now contains more than two million works of art from all points of the compass, ancient through modern times. It spans the history of world art. Hundreds of world-famous masterpieces.

This NY Waterway ferry was built by Allen Marine in Sitka, Alaska. Since 1967, family-owned Allen Marine, Inc. has been building vessels and conducting boat excursions for visitors to Alaska. All of the vessels owned by the company were constructed in our Sitka boat yard. Our many years of sight-seeing experience are evident in each vessel we design and build. Our highest priorities are passenger safety, comfort and wide open viewing. In 1999, Allen Marine was named Small Business of the Year by the Alaska State Chamber of Commerce.
The South Street Museum. Located on the site of what was once the leading port in the United States, the South Street Seaport Museum has turned historic ships into a fascinating exhibit that turns back the clock. Visitors can take a boat tour around the harbor, watch skilled craftsmen restore wooden ships or pop into a 19th century printing shop. They can also climb aboard the South Street Seaport Museum’s fleet of privately maintained historic vessels—the largest in the nation—which represents a range of crafts typical of the kinds of cargo ships and working vessels that once filled New York Harbor in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Night photography of Times Square in New York City. In the thirties, the Great Depression led to a sharp decline in theater attendance. Many businesses had to close down, and they were quickly replaced by strip teases and and peep shows. The area continued to attract visitors though and after the second World War, the Theater district was booming again. At the end of the sixties, the area started to go downhill and by the mid-seventies, tourists avoided Times square, which had become a seedy, crime-ridden and drug-infested place. In the 1980's redevelopment proposals were submitted, with little result. This changed a decade later, when the Walt Disney Company opened a Disney store on Times Square. This attracted more family-friendly businesses to the area, leading to a so-called 'Disneyfication'. The area is - like most of New York City - a lot safer now than in the early nineties and is once again a magnet for tourists and a center of New York's social scene.

Night photo of St. Patrick Cathedral in New York City Christmas Day. In 1855, John Roebling, the owner of a wire-rope company and a famous bridge designer, proposed a suspension bridge over the East River after becoming impatient with the Atlantic Avenue-Fulton Street Ferry. Roebling worked out every detail of the bridge, from its massive granite towers to its four steel cables. He thought his design entitled the bridge "to be ranked as a national monument… a great work of art."
