Alaska Photo Collection of Buckland, Alaska "Northwest Arctic Alaska"
Buckland, Alaska is located in the Northwestern region of Alaska. It is in the Northwest Arctic Borough School District and the nearest large community is Kotzebue, Alaska. This community of about 500 receives daily air service by Bering Air and Cape Smythe. The community of Buckland is mostly Inupiaq Eskimos that still live a subsistence lifestyle of fish and caribou. The Buckland River provides the locals with a strong supply of fish which a strong caribou tribe migrates near the village almost all year long. Buckland got a new school in 2002 and and a new health clinic in 2003. View Buckland Alaska Photo Collection >>
The locals pull their boats out so that they will not get damaged when the river freezes up. The Buckland River passes right by this rural Inupiaq Eskimo community of Buckland, Alaska. An abandoned cabin on the east side of the Buckland River with new school (built 2002) and the community of Buckland in the background. Herds of caribou pass a few miles outside of Buckland every spring and fall.
The local Inupiaq Eskimos in Buckland, Alaska live a subsistence lifestyle, with a main diet of Caribou and fish. They are not removed from the technological advances of the world, satellite dishes for tv and receives from wireless internet line the tops of most of the homes.
