A caribou herd just a few miles outside of Buckland, Alaska. Snowmachine is the only form of land transportation between the rural villages in arctic Alaska. This photo shows the bright sun over an abandoned cabin, which is part of the old Buckland settlement. Buckland Alaska is located on the Buckland River. The old community of Buckland sits on a hill overlooking the new community location. Buckland got a new school in 2002.

The Buckland River is effected by the tides and it is common to see these large formations of ice caused by the pressure.
During the summer boats allow the local Inupiaq Eskimos to get to their subsistence fish camps. During the winter months the boats are pulled from the river and stored by their home. This hand crafted boat was about 150 feet from the rivers edge. The city of Buckland offers a local washeteria with a large storage and water filtration system located nearby. Very few homes have running water and all of the waste water must be hauled by tanker to the waste water pond about 3 miles out of town.

Huskies are not common in must arctic Alaska homes. This German Shepard mix finds a place to sit off of the cold snow covered ground. Most dogs in the village will stay outside all season long, including the long cold winter.

The local Inupiaq Eskimos in Buckland, Alaska live a subsistence lifestyle, with a main diet of Caribou and fish. They are not removed from the technological advances of the world, satellite dishes for tv and receives from wireless internet line the tops of most of the homes.

The Porcupine Caribou Herd migrate through the mountain and tundra regions of Alaska. There are estimated to be more than 950,000 caribou in Alaska. This herd passes near Buckland, Alaska.
The streets in Buckland are made of dirt and covered in snow in the winter. The main form of transportation in the summer is 4 wheel ATV and boats in the summer. In the winter there are endless roads created by the frozen river and snow covered ground connecting many of the rural villages in Alaska. A dog sled rest in a kennel on the Buckland River.
