Hoar frost covers a tree in arctic Alaska. Large ice crystals hang on the tree and were formed when the clouds cover the tree line and temperature dropped to about -20°C. This photo is part of a collection of Alaska stock photography.
Much of the tundra in arctic regions gets less rainfall then deserts. The only place that trees grow is there there is a water source, along rivers and lake edges. The narrow branches on the tree are cause from the breaking of branches from heavy snow. An ice fin caused by a pressure ridge in the middle of Selawik Lake in the northwest arctic region of Alaska.
